Modest Remi was born on February 15th, 1882.  Modest Remi's father was Petrus Josephus Vervaeke and his mother was Marie Octavie Verroonen.  His paternal grandparents were Eduardus Vervaeke and Francisca Bulcaen; his maternal grandfather was Carolus Ludovicus Verroonen and his maternal grandmother is Julie Meerschman. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Jules Camille, Angelus Alois, Ernest Julien Remi, René Maurits, Cyriel Emiel Achiel, Marie-Louise and Irma Celina.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
