William  was born on May 24th, 1841 in Machiasport, Washington County, Maine.1  William 's father was Capt. William Phinney and his mother was Lucy Thaxter Drew.  His paternal grandparents were Josiah  Phinney and Sarah Messerve; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Drew and Zilpah Small.  He died from a stroke, tombstone and  William L. Phinney journal, at the age of 83 on February 7th, 1925 in Machias, Rockingham, Maine.  He was buried in Court St. Cemetery, Machias, Maine.2
