Christian was born in 1821 in Babyle, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.  Christian's father was Donald Gobha Smith and her mother was Marion Martin. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Malcolm, Donald, Norman, Margaret, Kelly, Mary and Henrietta.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
