Jane was born in 1826 in North Dell, Barvas, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland.  Jane's father was Donald Murray and her mother was Catherine MacLeod. She had a brother and three sisters, named Farquhar, Margaret, Anabella and Dolina.  She was the oldest of the five children.
