Donald was born on October 28th, 1858 in 6 South Dell, Barvas, Ross-shire, Scotland. Donald's father was Donald Murray and his mother was Catherine Gillies. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Angus, Norman, John, Kirsty, Ann, Margaret, Mary and Flora. He was the third youngest of the nine children.
