Norman was born in 1849 in 18 North Dell, Barvas, Ross-shire, Scotland. Norman's father was Alexander Morrison and his mother was Catherine Graham. His maternal grandparents were Kenneth Graham and Margaret Graham. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Angus, Ann, Margaret and Catherine.
