John was born in 1845 in 4 South Dell, Barvas, Ross-shire, Scotland.  John's father was Donald Morrison and his mother was Isabella Gillies. He had five brothers named Angus, Donald, Murdo, Alexander and Roderick.  He was the oldest of the six sons.  He died at the age of 37 in 1882.
