Finlay was born in 1894 in 22 North Dell, Barvas, Ross-shire, Scotland.  Finlay's father was Angus Morrison and his mother was Henrietta MacKenzie.  His paternal grandparents were Allan Morrison and Janet Murray; his maternal grandparents were Angus  MacKenzie and Ann Gillies. He had six brothers and a sister, named Angus, Alexander, Norman, John, Allan, Finlay and Ann.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
