Her paternal grandparents were Patrick Hannaway and Caroline Elizabeth Jones; her maternal grandparents were John Higgins and <Unknown>. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Patrick, Mary, Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Philomena. She was the youngest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Ann.
