Hedwig was born in 1184 in Orlamunde, Sachsen-Altenburg, Thuringia.1   Hedwig's father was Landgrave Hermann of Thuringia I and her mother was Countess Sofie of Sommerschenburg.  Her maternal grandparents were Count Palatine Friedrich of Sommerschenburg and <Unknown>. She had a brother and three sisters, named der Heilge, Jutte, Irmgard and Agnes.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
