Martha was born in 1841 in Kentucky.¹

Martha's father was William Staten and her mother was Matilda Brent. Her maternal grandparents were William Brent and Elizabeth Simmons. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Alfred, William, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary, Malissa, Alice, America and Cassandra. She was the second oldest of the ten children.
