Abigail's father was Sack Homer Gee and her mother was Mary Harlan Thomas. Her paternal grandparents were James Gee and Lucy Bugg; her maternal grandparents were Tolbert Thomas and Elizabeth Breed. She had a brother and five sisters, named James, Nancy, Sarah, Elizabeth, Dona and Cora. She was the oldest of the seven children.
