William
NORMAN

77
It is believed that William was the son of Joseph T. & Mary Read. After the Revolutionary War William lived in Fauquier Co., VA. & Georgia. I have seen William's second wife listed as Miss Sheppard, sister of Col. William Sheppard of South Carolina. In his will,Joseph T., (William's father) left the following to William "To my son William I leave a negro woman named Gude and no other part of my Estate". For detail info on William Norman see: "William Norman, Our Revolutionary War Ancestor" booklet and the "Battle of Brandywine". William served in the Revolutionary War for a period of 2 years. He was a Private in Capt. George Stubblefield's Company, 5th Virginia Reg, which was commanded by Lt. Col. Josiah Parker. In june 1776, he was transferred to Capt. Phillip Lee's company , 3rd VA. Reg., commanded by Col. Thomas Marshall and in Brig. Gen. George Weeden's celebrated Virginia Brigade. On 9/11/1777 William was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. He was shot through both knees and crippled for life. William partially raised a nephew, Thomas Dallas. When William died he left his land on Mill Creek to his grandsons, John H. & Peyton Wyatt, sons of William Harrison Norman, with their father as trustee. William's grave site is located deep in the woods, accessible only by a logging road. The land is owned by a logging company and permission has been given the Norman family of Lincoln Co. to go to the site. Darlene Clemons Berchtold
