William J. was born in October 1881 in LaRue Co., KY. William J.'s father was Thomas Jefferson Shofner and his mother was Mariah Elizabeth Sprowls. His maternal grandparents were William G. Sprowls and Sarah "Sally" Underwood. He had two brothers named Emmett and Jesse Milton. He was the youngest of the three children.-
