Thomas was born in 1460 in Shirley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. Thomas' father was John Shirley and his mother was Eleanor Willoughby. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Willoughby and Margaret De Freville. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Ralph, Robert, Hugh, Nicholas, Henry, Richard, Baldwin, Margaret, Alice, Jane, Eleanor and Anne. He was the second oldest of the thirteen children.-
