Skaggs vs. Patrick O. Hunley for an assault & battery"andagain on page 75, dated June 1845, "John C. Skaggs vs.JamesChildres. On Motion of the defendant a subpoena is awardedhimagainst William Skaggs to appeal here and bring with him atitlebond from R.R. Buckner to John Davis which is now in saidSkaggspossession." The area of Green Co. KY where John livedbecamepart of the newly created Taylor Co. KY in 1847. Hisnameappears in the book "Early History of Taylor Coounty, Kentucky"byClyde W. Hayes. On page 45, John C. Skaggs was appointed asa judgefor the election of county officers to be held the firstMonday inAugust 1854. On page 113, "John C. Skaggs wasindicted for "failing tokeep a road in repair". The case wasdismissed. Also on page 113,"John Hash and John Skaggs,indicted jointly for an assault were triedand the jury gave averdict fining Hash $4.58 and let Mr. Skaggs offwith a fine ofone cent and the costs of the case." Skaggs was appointed overseer of theBardstonroad leading from James Cashe's old place to the GreenCo.line...for him to keep in good order according to the law. (2)Oct10, 1850, Circuit Cort Record Books, p. 149, Nancy Readasadministrator of Phillip Read deceased against Henry Martin andJohnC. Skaggs. The case was dismissed against John for wantofjustification and the court ordered that John should recoverfrom theplaintiff "expended costs." (3) Feb. 1852, Order Bookpage 184, On amotion of Elias Skaggs, a tavern licence ishereby granted unto him tokeeep a tavern at the house nowoccupied by him...for one year fromthis date...he took the oathrequired by law and together with John C.Skaggs, his security,entered into and acknowledged bond to thecommonweath ofKentucky...(4) Aug. 4, 1854, Circuit Court Records, p.619, JohnC. Skaggs against Jesse Purvis, judgment was awardedtheplaintiff (John) against the defendant the sum of fiftysevendollars with interest at the rate of six percent annum fromthe28th day of March 1854 until paid..." (5) March 3, 1853, JohnC.Skaggs failed to appear in court in a case filed by hismother,Margaret Cannon, against him and was ordered to pay to hertheamount of one hundred and ten dollars at the rate of sixpercentannum from the 29th day of Jan 1840 until paid, less fiftyfivedollars that had been paid on the 20th day of August 1841.(6)Oct. 13, 1854, an instrument of writing supposing to be thelastwill and testament of John C. Skaggs, deceased was thisdayproduced into court and proven as required by law by the oathsofEli O. Fowler and J.H. McGlasson the subscribing witnessesthereto andthe same is confirmed and established as the truelast will andtestament of the said John C. Skaggs deceased andorder to berecorded...Lucinda Skaggs was named as executrix ofthe estate and anorder was given for Jopn H. McGlasson, WilliamLe, and George Hazelwoodto conduct an appraisal of the estateand report the same to somefuture term of the court.
