Margaret is listed on the 1850 Taylor Co. KY Census as "Margaret Cannon, age 90, born in VA." She is living in household # 245 in District #2. Living next to her on one side is her son John C. Skaggs and his family in household #244 and on the other side is Rebecca Blevins and her family in household #246.
Her name is also listed on the 1860 Taylor Co. KY Census where she is again listed as Margaret Cannon, age 102. She is living in the household with Rebecca Blevins and family.
Margaret's name appears in many Green Co. KY documents along with her first husband, David Skaggs. After his death she married John Cannon. The part of Green Co. KY where Margaret and her family lived becameTaylor Co. KY in 1848. Less than six years after her second marriage she filed a lawsuit in Taylor Co KY Circuit Court against her son,John C. Skaggs, and her son-in-law, Jesse Roberts, for a financial judgment. Court records show that on March 3, 1853, "the plaintiff, Margaret Cannon, alias Margaret Skaggs, appeared in court along with the defendant, Jesse Roberts, with their attorneys and submitted the law and facts in this cause to the judgement of the court without the interventions of a jury so far as said Roberts is concerned and the evidence heard. It is adjudged by the court that the defendant Roberts go hence hereof without delay and recover of the plaintiff his cousts herein expended." From this record it appears that Margaret lost her case against Jesse Roberts. However, it appears that she won the case against her son as the Court records also show the following: "The defendant John C. Skaggs, having been duly summoned and failing to answer, it is adjudged by the court that the plaintiff recover of the defendant John C. Skaggs one hundred and ten dollars therein at the rate of six percent per annum from the 29th day of January1840 until paid, also her costs herein expended. This payment is to have credit by fifty five dollars paid the 20th day of August 1841."
