James E. was born in 1833 in Illinois.1 James E.'s father was *John Logan Rev. Elder and his mother was *Nancy Newell. His maternal grandparents were Peter Newell and Susannah Durham. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named *Samuel C., John A., Sarina, Susan Ann, Mary Jane, Nancy M., Sarah Elizabeth Black, Catherine, Malinda Durham, America N. and Lavina.
