Mary was born about 1832 in North Carolina. Mary's father was Richard Jones and her mother was Mary "Polly" Foster. Her maternal grandparents were John Foster and Agness Allen Pulliam. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John Edward, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Ann and Fannie A.. She was the second youngest of the five children.-
