Susannah was born in 1792 in , Spotsylvania, Virginia, USA. Susannah's father was Thomas Foster and her mother was Susanna Foster. Her maternal grandparents were James Foster and Elizabeth Parish. She had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert Dudley, Austin, Catherine Graves and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the six children.
