Elsie May's father was William Henry Jones Sr. and her mother was Sarah Jane Hollinshead. Her paternal grandfather was Charles Jones; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Hollinshead and Ann Adderly. She had a brother and three sisters, named William Henry, Alice Tranter, Ethel Mae and Sarah Ann. She was the second oldest of the five children.
