There is no known document proving that Edward Doty of New Hanover County N.C., and Benjamin and Benajah Doty of Onslow County, are part of the family of James Doty. Several factors, hoverver, make it likely. First, it is chronologically consistent. decond, Benajah doty is a very unusual name, mking it highly unlikely that two men would be so named. Thirs, their mother's sister, Alicia Slater, married Henry Skibbow; and this couple had two children, Ann and Lewis in New Jersey. The will of Henry Skibbow of Onslow County N.C. names two of his children Lewis Skibbow and Ann Fenter.

The fact that the three brothers disappeared from the records of New Jersey at about the sme time and within a few years of the appearance of men with the same names in North Carolina makes the migration likely.

Five of the seven children of Edward Doty of New Hanover, N.C. bore the names of members of the family of Edward Doty of New Jersey: James, and Phebe, parents; Mary and Elizabeth, two of Edward's sisters; and Edward himself.

The name of Edward Doty appears in North Carolina records in 1750 and again in 1775. He also appears in New Hanover County Court Records in the period from 1759 to 1769.

The will of Edward doty of New Hanover, N.C. dated 5 October 1779, proved 7 January 1780 names his wife Hannah; sons James and Edward; daughters Elizabeth Lambert, Mary Doty, Hannah Doty, Phoby Doty, and Sarah Doty. He further stipulated that "... my stock both of Cattle and Hoggs remain undivided for the use of my family until either of my children James Doty, Edward Doty, Mary Doty, Hannah Doty, Phoby Doty, or Sarah Doty shall arrive at the age of twenty one year or marry, and then the said child to take an Equal share...".
