Johan was born about 1490 in Wesel, Rhineland, Prussia.1   Johan's father was Zailen and his mother was Gesina Zailen. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Roeloff, Gerlich, Aletta and Anna.  He was the second oldest of the five children.1
