1   John's father was John Townsend and his mother was Elizabeth Montgomery.  His paternal grandfather was Unknown Townsend. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George, James, Daniel, Thomas, Elizabeth, Anne, Rose and Sarah.  He died in 1709.1
