George was born in 1661 in Oyster Bay, Long Island.1   George's father was John Townsend and his mother was Elizabeth Montgomery.  His paternal grandfather was Unknown Townsend. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Daniel, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Anne, Rose and Sarah.1
