Sylvania was born in 1842.1   Sylvania's father was Jesse Thomas and her mother was Martha Combs.  Her paternal grandparents were Marchant Thomas and Jemima Hamilton. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John B, James M, William H, Elizabeth and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the six children.1
