1   Gilbert's father was William Strayhorn and his mother was Mary Tate.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan. He had a brother and a sister, named Samuel and Nancy. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named David, John, William, Aaron, Sarah, Mary and Miriam.1
