1   David's father was William Strayhorn and his mother was Mary Hunter.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan; his maternal grandparents were James Hunter and Mary Walker. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Aaron, Sarah, Mary and Miriam. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Samuel, Gilbert and Nancy.1
