John was born on July 22nd, 1723 in Lebanon, Connecticut.1   John's father was John Sprague and his mother was Hannah Burt.  His paternal grandparents were John Sprague and Lydia Unknown; his maternal grandfather was Thomas Burt. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Hulda and Rachel.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Ebenezer, Jonathan and Hannah.1
