Thelma's father was J. H. Smithie and her mother was Polly Ann Elizabeth Boyett. Her maternal grandparents were William M. Boyett and Sarah Pricilla "Sallie" Holland. She had five brothers and a sister, named Horace, La Count, Lacount, Thomas, Wilber and Mary.-
