Joseph was born in 1812 in Ireland.1   Joseph's father was James Smith and his mother was Ann Colwell.  His maternal grandfather was Robert Colwell. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert Colwell, Eliza and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 65 on March 3rd, 1877.1
