James was born about 1768.1   James' father was John Ray and his mother was Sarah Miller.  His maternal grandparents were George Miller and Mary Comb. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, George, John, David, Margaret, Jane, Sally, Susan and Lydia B..  He was the third oldest of the ten children.1
