JOSEPH PROHASKA WAS BORN IN AuSABLE, MICHIGAN DURING HIS PARENTS SHORT STAY IN THAT AREA. THE PROHASKA FAMILY LIVED IN THE BAY CITY AREA FROM ABOUT 1875 ON. MOST OF THE MALE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY WERE INVOLVED IN THE LUMBER BUSINESS IN ONE JOB OR OTHER.
JOSEPH MARRIED EVA CHARLOTTE DENNIS ON DECEMBER 23, 1899 IN LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN. THE MARRIAGE RECORD LISTS HIS NAME AS JOSEPH PROHAZKA AND OCCUPATION AS LUMBER INSPECTOR. ALMOST IMMEDIATLY AFTER BEING MARRIED THEY MOVED TO THE UPPER PENINSULA FOR A TIME. THE 1900 CENSUS SHOWS THEM AS RESIDING IN McMILLAN TOWNSHIP, LUCE COUNTY.
AFTER TALKING TO SOME OF MY DENNIS RELATIVES I NOW BELIEVE THAT EVA AND JOSEPH MET AT A LUMBER CAMP IN THE U.P. CELIA DENNIS AND HER SISTER EVA (YOUR GRANDMOTHER) WERE COOKS AT A LUMBER CAMP IN GERMFASK AREA OF THE U.P. THIS IS THE AREA IN WHICH EVA AND JOSEPH ARE LISTED IN THE 1900 CENSUS. I THINK THEY MET THERE, FELL IN LOVE, GOT MARRIED IN LUDINGTON AND THEM MOVED BACK TO THE U.P. THE PICTURE YOU LOANED ME OF THEM WAS TAKEN IN NEWBERRY, MICHIGAN AND THAT IS VERY CLOSE TO GERMFASK.
THEIR DAUGHTER GRACE DIED AT A VERY YOUNG AGE WITH TB. JOSEPH'S SISTER FLORANCE ANNA HAD ALSO DIED IN 1920 OF TB. GRACE DIED IN LUDINGTON AT THE HOME OF EVA'S SISTER MARY MILLWOOD. THE MILLWOOD FARM IS JUST ONE MILE FROM WHERE I WAS BORN AND RAISED.
