John was born on July 7th, 1662 in Paquonock, Hartford, Connecticut.1   John's father was Samuel Phelps and his mother was Sarah Griswold.  His paternal grandparents were William Phelps and Elizabeth Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Edward Griswold and Margaret Hicks. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Phillip, Samuel, Timothy, William, Ephraim, Josias, Mary Hester, Abigail and Sarah. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Nathaniel and Sarah.  He died at the age of 17 on July 30th, 1679 in age 17.2
