George was born in 1566.1   George's father was James Phelps and his mother was Joan Coke.  His paternal grandfather was Richard Phelps. He had eight brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Giles, Edward, Kenelm, Richard, Robert, Nicholas, Anne and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.1
