  Elijah Beardsley Phelps was born July 21, 1799, at New Milford, Ct.  He died march 20, 1855. he moved to Fishkill, New York and taught school. He married first Wealthy Lawrence, December 30 1821. little is known about her and she died without issue shortly after their marriage (June 25, 182(5)?). later, Elijah married one of his students, Jane Wright, born April 30, 1809, Fishkill, NY and died Jan 1, 1866 in Schuyler Co. Ill.
  
  I think that it necessary to include some of the material that was sent to me by Thelma Phelps Ward, we may have future generations that will desire to become a D.A.R. She said, " I had to prove that Elijah was married to Jane Wright and  was mother of his children. The D.A.R. records accepted photostatic copy of the Walty Family Bible in which their marriage was recorded."  She also quotes from a letter from the D.A.R. to her, "The Phelps Geneology , volume, page 730, give Wealthy Lawrence as the only wife Elijah Beardsley Phelps and the mother of his children. We feel this isa mistake, as your Bible records and the census records will prove that Jane Wright was the mother of the children listed. We are under the impression that Wealthy Lawrence, the first wife, lived only a short time after her marriage. We have made a note in our copy of the Phelps Geneology and have referred to the Bible record sent by you which is on file in the D.A,R. Library. We wish to thank you for your cooperation in this matter which has enabled us to completethe verification of Mrs Bilderback's record."
