John was born about 1157 in Of, Staffordshire, England.1   John's father was Robert Noel and his mother was Alice Mounfort.  His maternal grandfather was Hugo Mounfort. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Philip, Robert, Richard and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the six children.1
