His paternal grandparents were William Lewis and Margaret Sturr; his maternal grandparents were Isaac Duncan and Elizabeth Dickson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Dewitt Franklin, Elwood Duncan, Clarence Emmitt, Florence Cordelis, Clara Eva and Emma Bell. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
