Samuel was born before 1817.1   Samuel's father was Johnathan Johnson and his mother was Susanna Burwell.  His paternal grandparents were Windsor Johnson and Rebecca Nichols; his maternal grandfather was David Burwell. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Johnathan, Hiram, Luther, Phebe and Prudence.  He was the second oldest of the six children.1
