Francis Marion was born about 1847.1   Francis Marion's father was Francis John F. Johnson and his mother was Elizabeth B. Townsend.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Roderick Townsend and Nancy Permelia Dean. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William James G., Asa, John A., Light S., Charles Walker, Alfred W., Ann Pamelia, Samantha C., Carpalona E. C. and Nancy E..  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.1
