1   Mattie's father was Jesse Jernigan and her mother was Sarah Collins.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Jernigan and Martha Underwood Holland. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Henry, John, Lee, Mel, Tom, Debbie and Eva.1
