Elmer's father was William Hopp and his mother was Augustina Glentz.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopp and Johanna Maria Adrian; his maternal grandparents were John Glentz and Augustina Prahl. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Marlow, Clarence, Beatrice, Bernice and Violet.
