Joseph was born in 1848 in Erie, New York.1   Joseph's father was Gregory Herberger and his mother was Susan Acker.  His maternal grandparents were Rudolph Acker and Margaret Sheffler. He had six brothers and six sisters, named John, David, Gregory, Peter, Henry, Jake, Christiama, Catherine, Margaret, Mary, Susan and Matilda.1
