Alexander was born in 1724 in Coleraine, Londonberry, Scotland.1   Alexander's father was Robert Hemphill and his mother was Unknown Stewart. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Arthur, Samuel, Mary, Catharine, Elizabeth, Ann and Eleanor.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died in York, South Carolina.1
