1   Stephen's father was John Hawkins and his mother was Mary.  His paternal grandparents were William Hawkins and Lydia Ballou Gardner. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isiah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah, Abigail, Lydia, Martha, Mary and Sarah.1
