Benton was born in 1854 in IA.1   Benton's father was Frank Hamilton and his mother was Eliza Carl.  His maternal grandparents were George Carl and Elizabeth Unknown. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Allen, Paul, Grant, Lee, Carl, Unknown, Lenora, Fanny and Minnie.1
