John Joseph's father was Charles Alois Guepfer and his mother was Elizabeth Steffen. His paternal grandparents were Alois Joseph Guepfer and Katherine Heinzer; his maternal grandparents were Hubert Steffen and Juliana Abts. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Frederick William, Mary A., Christina, Theresa Frances, Caroline Cecilia, Clara C., Mary Katherine, Mary Magdelene and Rose Katherine.-
