Charles was born in February 1880 in Michigan.1   Charles' father was James Fenton and his mother was Lucretia J. McLaughlin.  His maternal grandmother was Diane Unknown. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Erwin, Fred James, Laura, Estellah and Ethiel Lorena.  He was the second youngest of the six children.1
