Simon Houghton "Holton" was born on February 3rd, 1813 in Goffstown, NH.1 Simon Houghton "Holton"'s father was James Butterfield and his mother was Lydia Barnes. His paternal grandparents were John Butterfield and Naomi Stevens; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Barnes and Rachel Barratt. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Barthene, Orrimel S. H. "Osh", Hannah, Lydia Abigail and Anna Sargent. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.1 General Notes

Born on 2-3-1813, of whom I shall speak at length, as many of his descendants are still living in Central Vermont and Addison County. If one will again read the genealogy written by Charles and Myrtie Butterfield, a portion of which has been found, his middle name is given as "Houghton," and this causes quite some disbelief as to his middle name. In every town where he had lived, and died at Stockbridge, upon business dealings land records and such it was always Holton. and this was the way he was always spoken to, or spoken of.
