  Son of John II and Phebe ________. Butterfield, was born in Goffstown, 9-7-1753, married 1771, Maomi Stevens, born 10-24-1751, the daughter fo Timothy and Elizabeth Stevens, she died 1-9-1816.  He served in the Revolutionary War, and resided on the road leading from the village to the uncanoonuc mountains upon the farm north of where Charles C. Hadley now lives.  THe house long since gone, stood southerly of the tomb of Jefferson Jones.  He died 10-10-1828.
  
  John Butterfield was brought up during the first years of the founding of Goffstown and lived on the read from the village to Uncanoonuc Mountain. His father was accidently shot (as previously stated) probably when John was in his early teens.  He and his brother Peter were the "men" of the family with three younger sisters and a mother to care for The History of Antrim, New Hampshire tells that John and Peter took turns of the six months each in the Revolutionary Army throughout the War. It is certain that Peter was at Bunker Hill, that John was at Bennington, that both were togetherwith General Sullivan at Newport, Rhode Island in 1778; that at that time John was a Sergeant and Peter was a Corporal.  After the Revolution John resumed his life in Goffstown but remained active in the peacetime militia, for we find him referred to a "Lieutenant" in 1786; in 1796 and until 1808 he was Major of the First Battalion or the 9th Regiment of Militia.  He served a total of ten years as Selectman between 1784 and 1798.  He was a State Representative in 1799, 1800, 1801, 1803, 1804, 1806, and 1807.
